June Campbell Davies

Falling Leaves Return to their Roots

June Campbell Davies is an established dancer, choreographer and teacher who is based in Cardiff. She has been working as a movements facilitator and Director for Oasis One World Choir for the past few years.

“Oasis shows a warm Welsh welcome to people seeking sanctuary. Operating as a community centre in the heart of Splott, our essential and holistic services aim to support people as they integrate in Wales”.

I was fortunate enough to be invited by June to attend one of the choir sessions at Oasis. This was a beautiful experience which allowed me to see the important work June and those working at the refugee centre have been doing.

They provided an incredibly safe and gentle environment for people to feel secure connected and free to express themselves.

June’s generosity has been incredible throughout the process of getting to know her and creating this painting of her for The National Library of Wales. The painting created is filled with images from Junes life, tracing her family roots in Grenada and moments from her life and career in Wales. This all went into creating a rich tapestry of Junes life and impact in Wales as she has dedicated her career to nurturing creatives and supporting those around her and within her community.

I hope this painting does her justice and will celebrate her life and impact in Wales for years to come.
